Optimist League of Dreams is league of opportunity

The Optimist League of Dreams has gotten off to a good start this season at Prospect Meadows with approximately 40 boys and girls playing ball.

It’s a healthy number of players, but there’s always room for more kids and more teams.

“There’s no limitation on signups,” says Tim Brecht, the league director. “We’ll never turn anyone away. We want everyone to play who might be interested.”

The Optimist League of Dreams is absolutely free for all participants. Players will be given jerseys and caps, thanks to donations from Minor League Baseball Charities. Equipment is available for all the players, and instructors are provided by Prospect Meadows.

Any boy or girl who is currently in the 2nd grade through 5th grade is eligible. Call Tim Brecht at 319-899-3680 or send him an email at Tim@ProspectMeadows.com.

The 2nd and 3rd graders are in one league, with the 4th and 5th graders in another. It’s a great way to play ball, either to get started in your first league or continue what you’ve already begun.

“The whole idea is to give kids an opportunity to play,” said Brecht.

“We stress the fundamentals and having fun.”

All the games are played on Mondays and Wednesdays on the Optimist Field at Prospect Meadows, with the first game at 5:30. The remaining schedule of games is June 2-7-9-14-16-21-23-30 and July 2-5. The games are non-competitive and coach-pitch.

There will be an All-Star Game on Monday, July 5 at Veterans Memorial Stadium, with a fee dinner provided for all the players and their families.

The Cedar Rapids Tuesday Noon Optimist Club, Fleet Farm, Perfect Game, and Prospect Meadows are the presenting sponsors.
